Immediate Medical Management on the Field of Play

What is the course?

The RFL Immediate Medical Management On the Field of Play Course (IMMOFP) is a high level medical qualification which is designed specifically for the pre-hospital management of players.

The course is accredited with the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh).

How does the course work?

Candidates are assessed on five elements according to an objective marking criteria, with an overall pass mark of 75% needed to pass the course. The assessment will compromise the following:

  • Pre-course MCQ - 5% - 40 question MCQ paper
  • On-course workstation - 10% - On-going, on-course assessment. Candidates will be assessed by instructors delivering the workstations with respect to their practical engagement in the learning tasks undertaken
  • Practical Scenario Exam - 25% - Objective marking criteria for professional performance within the practical scenario
  • CPR Exam - 25% - Objective marking criteria for professional performance within the practical scenario
  • Theory Paper - 35% - 50 question MCQ paper

The qualification must be reaccredited with recertification as set out in the four-year cycle below:

  • YEAR 1 Two-day IMMOFP course
  • YEAR 2 One-day refresher course
  • YEAR 3 One-day refresher course
  • YEAR 4 Two-day IMMOFP course

Medical staff have two months from the anniversary of the previous years course to attend the next course. Keeping the qualification up to date and booking on a course in time is the personal responsibility of medical staff.

Who can attend?

The RFL IMMOFP course is designed for all medical staff working (or volunteering) at clubs who are, or may be, involved in giving treatment or advice to players within a professional club environment (training and/or match days).

To attend the you must be one of the following:

Doctor Must be fully registered with the GMC, be in current practice practicing, not be under any investigation or period of suspension with the GMC and possess the appropriate professional indemnity insurance for working in sport. It is best practice to hold a Diploma in Sports Medicine or equivalent/higher.

Physiotherapist Must be CSP & HCPC registered and not be under any investigation or suspension period with a degree in physiotherapy and possess the appropriate professional indemnity insurance.

Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) Must be fully registered with the NMC and meet revalidation requirements, not be under any investigation or suspension period with an Advanced Practice MSc and possess professional indemnity insurance for working in sport.

Paramedic Must hold BSc or HND/Foundation degree in Paramedic Science, registered with the HPCP, not under any investigation or suspension period and possess the appropriate professional indemnity insurance for working in sport.

Sports Therapist Must be a graduate Sports Therapist, be registered as member with a professional body such as Society of Sports Therapists, or Sports Therapy Association or Federation of Holistic Therapists and possess appropriate professional indemnity insurance for working in sport. If applying for IMMOFP for the first time must hold an ITMMiF L4 or PHICIS L2 qualification.

Sports Rehabilitator Must hold a BSc in Sports Rehabilitation, be a member of BASRAT and have appropriate indemnity insurance for working in sport  If applying for IMMOFP for the first time must hold an ITMMiF L4 or PHICIS L2 qualification.

After starting their role at a club new Doctors and Physiotherapists have three months to successfully complete and pass the course, or until the first available course becomes available if there are no courses within this time frame. Sports Therapists and Sports Rehabilitators must both successfully complete the course before entering the field of play.

What does it cost?

Two Day Course

For staff currently employed by an RL club payment (£675+VAT) will be made via a deduction from the clubs Central Distributions. Candidates must get permission from their club before applying. Independent candidates must pay for the course in full (£825+VAT) via BACS within 7 days of date of invoice which will be generated once a place has been confirmed by the RFL. We reserve the right to offer your place to another candidate if payment is not received within this time frame.

One Day Course

For staff currently employed by an RL club payment (£375+VAT) will be made via a deduction from the clubs Central Distributions. Candidates must get permission from their club before applying. Independent candidates must pay for the course in full (£450 +VAT) via BACS within 7 days of date of invoice which will be generated once a place has been confirmed by the RFL. We reserve the right to offer your place to another candidate if payment is not received within this time frame.
